Frequently Asked Questions

What kinds of books do you accept?

We accept gently used books of all types—fiction, nonfiction, children’s books, educational materials, cookbooks, and more. Please avoid donating books that are damaged, moldy, or missing pages.

Do you accept textbooks or encyclopedias?

We accept textbooks, especially if they’re in good condition. Unfortunately, we cannot accept outdated encyclopedias, as they are often not reusable.

How do I schedule a pickup?

You can schedule a pickup directly on our website by visiting the Schedule a Donation page. Just choose a convenient date and provide your address—we’ll handle the rest!

Is there a fee for pickup?

Nope! Pickup is completely free for donors within our service area in the Sacramento region. For very large donations or special requests, we may reach out in advance to confirm logistics.

Where do the books go after I donate them?

Books are either donated directly to local nonprofits, schools, and libraries, or sold to raise funds for community literacy and education programs. Every book is used in a way that supports learning and access to knowledge. Some books will be sold to support our operating expenditures.

Are donations tax-deductible?

Yes—book donations made to us can be tax-deductible upon request. Simply let us know that you would like a receipt of donation in the comments when you schedule your donation. A receipt from an affiliate nonprofit will be sent to you after your donation has been received.

What if I have a large number of books to donate (e.g., from a school, estate, or office)?

We welcome large donations and can work with you to coordinate logistics. Please contact us directly through our website or email us at sacramentobookdonation@gmail.com for assistance with bulk pickups.

Is there a minimum number of books required to schedule a pickup?

Yes, we ask that donors have at least 10 books to schedule a pickup. This helps us use our time and resources efficiently, so we can serve as many community members as possible.

Do I need to be home for the pickup?

Nope! You don’t need to be home. Just leave your books clearly labeled and securely placed on your porch or doorstep by your scheduled pickup time. Our team will collect them with care and send a confirmation once the pickup is complete.

Is Sacramento Book Donation a nonprofit?

Sacramento Book Donation is a mission-driven social enterprise. While we are not a registered charity, our purpose is rooted in community impact. We collect donated books and use them to directly support local educational programs, libraries, and nonprofit partners—creating value and opportunity where it might not otherwise exist. Every book we process helps fund or supply efforts that promote literacy, learning, and access to knowledge in the Sacramento region. Your donations make this possible, and we’re proud to turn them into real, measurable good for our community.
